As technology marches on, it can hardly be surprising that even the humble whiteboard has received a digital makeover. After all, the original whiteboard was a profound step upward in suitability, comfort of use, health and learning potential back in its day. Every teacher loves the idea of a tool that encourages student interaction and learning- however, they are not the most intuitive of things, and many smartboards are more of a hindrance then a help because of it.

Allowing access to a host of media not accessible with traditional devices, you can easily access, use and manipulate images and videos – and save for future use. You bypass the need to erase information away and the limited space of the traditional chalk board. It’s easy to refer back to previous data and lessons, print the screen you’ve developed at any time and even allow you virtual field trips via 3D technology built into the smartboard. These are only some of the great advantages this fantastic piece of new technology brings to bear in the classroom. Not only that, but there are maintenance costs involved- a whiteboard is a whiteboard all its lifetime, but with the interactive smartboard you face a lifetime of replacement parts, software upgrades and more. And let’s face it, not every soul in the classroom is as computer literate as their charges. The technology is not exactly intuitive to use, and requires you to learn the specialist software it operates with, a fact that has confounded more than one technologically challenged teacher. Even those who are tech-savvy may fail to access the full range of its features without proper training [read: further expense]. And, of course, as with most gadgets it’s not immune to failure. Technological hitches in the classroom mean tinkering and troubleshooting or a call to the school IT support, both of which mean limited learning and wasted time.
